When Karina first came to Denver, it was not by choice—it was out of love for her child. One of her young children had been diagnosed with cancer and needed specialized care at the Children’s Hospital. For more than a year, Karina remained faithfully by her child’s side through treatments, long hospital days, and the emotional toll that comes with fighting such a difficult battle.
Throughout that year, she focused entirely on her child’s healing. But when the time came for discharge from the hospital, a new challenge emerged. She realized she had no home to return to.
With courage and determination, Karina entered the shelter with her family, bringing with her three school-aged children and the weight of the journey they had all endured. Despite everything they had been through, Karina was determined to keep moving forward.
Each day, she created stability for her children in the midst of uncertainty. At the day site, she dedicated time to homeschooling her children, making sure their education continued even during this season of transition. She also worked during the day—often with her children by her side—doing everything she could to provide for them.
Along the way, Karina began addressing the deep trauma she experienced during her child’s cancer battle. She joined a women's group at a local Christian ministry and began to seek healing through a spiritual lens. With support and time to heal, her strength and joy began to return. Staff and volunteers have witnessed a remarkable transformation as she has grown into a more hopeful and confident version of herself.
Today, Karina continues to work hard for her family’s future. Her perseverance and dedication are paying off. Within the next month, she and her children will be moving into their very own home—a place where they can finally begin a new chapter of stability, healing, and hope.
Karina's story is a powerful reminder that even in life’s most difficult seasons, resilience, community, and faith can help families rise again.
